What this works out

The steps

  1. Dig and muck away: the soil you dig out, bulked up, in skips
  2. Sub-base (MOT Type 1): compacted layer under the bedding
  3. Slabs, bedding and jointing: slabs, mortar bed and joints
  4. Fall: how much lower one edge sits, so rain runs off

The fall uses the patio calculator's fall ratio. Check the slab maker's laying guide for the fall they want.

Questions for your builder

  • How deep should the dig and the sub-base be for this ground?
  • Which way should the patio fall, and where will the water go (a border, a channel drain, a soakaway)?
  • Will the finished level stay at least 150 mm below the damp-proof course of the house?
  • Do these slabs need a primer or a particular bedding mix from the maker?
